What’s Happening in Second Grade?

January is going by quickly.  Of course the children like the snow.  They have made snowmen by folding paper and cutting snowflakes.  These are on display in the room and in the hall.

I want to thank you for your generous giving toward the Christmas bonuses.  Also, special thanks to those of you who baked or sent in Christmas items.  Sometimes I don’t know if my thank you notes always make it home.  Your generosity  made the holidays more enjoyable.

In history, the class is learning about the different people groups who helped build America:  the colonists, the pioneers, and the cowboys.  They will be making covered wagons and loading them with appropriate items for traveling west.  Our unit will culminate with a trip to the Klamath County Museum. .  Details about the field trip will be coming home.   Hopefully, the “pioneer lady” will be there again this year to share with us and let the children handle various related objects.  The museum contains many things that enhance our second grade themes, such as:

  • the rock collection
  • Indian artifacts and displays
  • high desert animals
  • pioneer scenes

In math, we are beginning the subtraction process.  Therefore, we have stopped the addition timed tests.  We will begin the subtraction timed tests after the children have had a couple of weeks to gain a better understanding.  At that point, you will see the timed practice tests come home.  They are to be handled in the same manner as we did the addition.

The most recent highlight was hearing from the second grade class in Jupiter, Florida.  They have agreed to be pen pals with our class.  Each student has picked a name out of the hat to be his or her pen pal.  Letter form was introduced and the first set of letters will soon be on their way to Jupiter Christian School.  The children will anxiously await a reply, although I’ve told them to allow two weeks or more for delivery and the other students writing their letters.

Lastly, I’m starting a message center where the children can write their own notes and letters and make cards.  If you have any old paper materials, etc. that could be used in this capacity, please send them in.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Throne
